My new hobby...

My cake obsession has reached another milestone: fondant! I'm proud to introduce my first fondant cake! I made the fondant from scratch which was quite fun and made some of my buttercream to pipe the clouds and ect. This cake is a "gender cake". I have decided it would be fun to make these for people who would like a fun and creative way to learn the gender of their baby.

How it works: You go in for your sonogram and when it's time to learn the sex of the baby, the tech writes it down and puts it in a sealed envelope. You then deliver it to the baker who then creates a "gender cake". The cake is secretly colored either pink or blue on the inside with gender neutral fondant on the outside. When the expectant couple cuts into the cake it reveals the sex of the baby!
Now, for those who cannot wait (like me), it's also a fun way to reveal to the kids or maybe extended family and friends what your having.

The banner on mine reads,"Twinkle, Twinkle little star, soon we'll find out what you are!" The banner doesn't look great because I'm waiting on edible paint to write the words. I wanted to get it done so I used sharpie on the fondant, took the picture and then threw it away. It will look much nicer next time. Duane and I (yes, I said Duane) are hoping to take a fondant and gum paste class next month. Hopefully I will be able to learn some tricks of the trade but all in all, not bad for my first cake!

Seriously Kelly it looks amazing! I thought it would be cute because you were doing it of course but this is above and beyond. It almost makes me want to get pregos again!
